Gippsland Dawn

Welcome to a new dawn in Australia's energy generation

Gippsland Dawn marks a new era of energy generation for Gippsland and Australia. This project is a vital part of the Australian government's plan to achieve net zero emissions by 2050.

By harnessing the power of Gippsland’s abundant wind resources, the offshore turbines will generate green energy capable of powering over 1 million homes and businesses. Offshore wind energy is poised to play a crucial role for a reliable and secure electricity supply as Australia transitions away from fossil fuels.

Gippsland Dawn will be located 10–33 kilometres off the coast between Paradise Beach and Ocean Grange in Gippsland and will feature up to 140 turbines on fixed foundations, connected by cables to up to four offshore substations. From these substations, subsea cables will transport the power to an onshore landing point.

During the peak of construction, Gippsland Dawn is expected to create up to 2,000 jobs and once operational, the project will supply electricity for up to 30 years.

Declared area

The Federal Minister for Climate Change and Energy, Chris Bowen, declared the area in the Bass Strait off Gippsland as suitable for offshore wind in December 2022.

Pre-feasibility studies and desktop assessments

Gippsland Dawn received its feasibility licence for an area 10–33 km off the coast of Gippsland in July 2024.
PHASE 1: 2022 - 2024

Design and approvals

Detailed environmental assessments and geotechnical surveys to be completed. Gippsland Dawn will continue to seek feedback and engage closely with stakeholders and the community.

PHASE 2: 2024

Construction (2 to 3 years)

A commercial licence is required for the project to move into the construction phase. It can be applied for once the project is environmentally, technically, and commercially viable.
PHASE 3: 2029

Operations and maintenance (up to 30 years)

Up to 140 fixed foundation wind turbines, four offshore substations and associated infrastructure in operation, generating up to 2.1 GW of electricity!
PHASE 4: 2031

Decommissioning (18 to 24 months)

As part of the project’s approval, Gippsland Dawn will have a comprehensive decommissioning strategy.
PHASE 5: 2061
